Unidentified Gunmen on Sunday attacked the unit offices of the Department of State Services this and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)in Nnewi, Anambra state.
The FRSC and DSS unit Offices were set ablaze by it’s attackers
The armed attackers who were reported to have arrived in Nnewi with four Sport Utility Vehicles(SUVs) were said to have operated for hours as the country home of an engineer and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Joe Igbokwe was also attacked.
Reports also revealed that two persons who tried to make a video recording of the situation was gunned down.
A source confirmed the town was on fire and Gates of almost all the streets in the town were shut.
“I just left Nnewi to my village and my friend called to tell me that Nnewi is on fire, that almost all the gates of the streets in the town has been locked, as it stands now, I can’t go back to my house, am thinking of going to Awka”
Another source said the incident happened, Abubor Nnewichi around Teaching hospital which left a young girl dead.
“The girl, a student, was returning from church with her room mate at Abubor newichi and fell directly into the armed men, they both ran to the nearest place, a hausa man’s shop, they gunmen fired several shots at them there, somewhere close to teaching hospital and bullets hit one of the girls on her backside and leg, she was still alive when she was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately the Doctors were not around when she arrived, she gave up the ghost as a result of that”.
The Anambra state Police Command Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, who confirmed the attack earlier said it was a case of fire incident.
According to him, at about 2pm, Oct. 3, the command received a distress call of a fire incident in Nnewi.
“Police operatives are currently on ground and the area has since been cordoned off.
“Further details will be communicated please,” he said.
When contacted again, The state police PRO said the hoodlums responsible for the unfortunate incident came with Petrol bombs.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the hoodlums came with petrol bombs, as a result of vehicles parked at DSS office there, the offices caught fire, in a similar situation, they threw petrol bombs at Dr Igbokwe’s residence and as a result of the inflammables there, the residence caught fire, they also went to the house of the former House of Rep member and minister of Finance, Mr Okongwu, in his residence and set the cars there ablaze”.
Also, a branded vehicle of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was also set ablaze” he said.
Ikenga noted that the “Anambra state Police Command under the watch of CP Tony Olofu is not deterred with the recent development, investigations is still ongoing and the officers of the command are fully on ground there”.
